Several years ago, I embarked on a profound journey that transformed my life and the course of my career. A lifelong resident of California, it was time to visit my parent’s homeland of India for a very special occasion—my grandfather’s 100th birthday.
Back then, I didn’t know much about my grandfather’s condition, only that he lived in a rural village in the beautiful northern region of the country.
What I found when I got there astonished me.
My grandfather enjoyed a meaningful, happy life. He ate an excellent diet including fresh fruits and vegetables at every meal. He took daily walks and remained active, both physically and mentally. He’d partake in a daily nap and a full night’s sleep. His days were filled with interesting conversation, laughter with loved ones, and prayer.
I immediately noticed he was on minimal medication—despite his age.
Seeing my grandfather was eye-opening. My first thought was I hoped that I could enjoy the same quality of life if I am fortunate to live so long. My second concerned the residents and patients I cared for in the hospital back home. They, too, deserve the same exceptional quality of care.
I knew together with my father, Jay Shah, I could create a nurturing and compassionate environment for elder care based on what I had experienced. As a board-certified physical therapist specializing in orthopedics and geriatrics, I also possess the professional skills to improve the lives of your loved ones.
